Keys AHEC provides tobacco cessation services for free in Monroe County. Clients interested in quitting smoking can participate with local tobacco treatment counselors in one of the following ways:
1. Quit Smoking Now: A 4-Week, 1-hour per session group course that works with clients on the process of planning, quitting, managing triggers, and preventing relapse. Sessions are held in-person throughout the Keys. All clients are eligible to receive 2 disbursements of nicotine replacement therapy for free.
2. Tools to Quit: A 1-time group counseling session that prepares clients for the journey to quit smoking by reviewing all the steps in the process and identifying the clients needs and challenges. This session is intended to give clients a head start in the quitting process. Participants receive 1 disbursement of nicotine replacement therapy for free. If they need further support they may come back for another session.
3. Zoom Meeting: Clients can participate in the Tools to Quit program via a virtual interactive meeting from their computer, tablet, or smartphone. This is available 3 days per week in Monroe County. A client can sign up by visiting keysahec.org and clicking on the register link (details below) or they can call our tobacco support line at 305-743-7111 extension 205 for assistance in enrolling.
4. Phone Meeting: In some cases if the above 3 options are not viable for clients due to health or other considerations, our counselors can arrange to conduct a counseling session on the telephone.
Health care providers can provide client referrals by completing the tobacco cessation referral forms and then emailing them to tobacco@ahec.ufl.edu
A local tobacco treatment counselor will call the client to discuss their interest and needs. Direct contact is most effective in getting client participation in the programs. Clients can register for the virtual meeting at keysahec.org
