Health Professional CMEs

Keys AHEC coordinates accredited continuing professional education (CME) opportunities throughout the year for Medical Professionals in Monroe County.

If you have ever been to see the doctor here in Monroe County and also been seen by a medical student from the University of Miami, you may have unknowingly helped recruit a future physician to come and practice here in the Florida Keys. Keys AHEC in partnership with the University of Miami AHEC Program and Miller School of Medicine has been coordinating health professional student rotations from Key Largo to Key West since its inception in 1990.

Most people may know Keys AHEC for our children’s medical and dental clinics or the tobacco cessation program, but all AHECs across the country were originally developed to support, train, recruit and retain clinicians in medically underserved communities. One of the ways AHECs meet this goal is by immersing health professional students in primary care rotations at local private practices and community clinics in rural, medically underserved areas.

These clerkships provide a service learning experience for students interested in rural or underserved health care careers while increasing direct patient care services for the local population. The implementation of health care practices and professional recruitment in rural or medically underserved areas is necessary to reduce ER visits, support positive health behaviors, and control chronic disease.

AHECs are designed to be responsive to local health needs by serving as an important link between academic training programs and rural communities with the goal of increasing positive community-based health outcomes.

Keys AHEC and the University of Miami partner with the following clinicians and practices to create the Florida Keys Family Medicine Clerkship:

Dr. Bruce Boros of Advanced Urgent Care (Key West, Marathon and Key Largo)

Dr. Brian Magrane and Dr. Eileen Turbessi (Family Practice in Tavernier)

Dr. Joanne Mahoney (Internal Medicine in Key Largo)

Dr. Susana May (Family Practice in Key Largo)
